Weeeeee're Back!

After a short summer hiatus, we are back and working on next year's local competition. Can you believe that it is only a little over four months away (see countdown clock to the right)? Crazy. So, what is new...we went over the comment forms from last year's competition and confirmed the date and location.

Here are some important dates for you:
  • February 20, 2010 at Olympia High School - Local Competition
  • March 26, 2010 at Altamonte Hilton - State Competition
  • May 6-9, 2010 at Disney - National Competition

National Competition Volunteers

Well, we had our last committee meeting and are officially on hiatus until October. Next year we will try to fix some of this year's glitches: chairs, lunch distribution and entertainment (think American Idol), and have a pre-meeting just for coaches 2-3 weeks before the competition. Pencil next year's date on your calendar, February 20, 2010 at Olympia High School. I've updated our little countdown clock so that you can count the days. Final confirmation of the date and location will occur this fall. Fortunately, if you want more math there are two more opportunities to participate in Mathcounts.

Volunteering at the national competition is as easy as clicking this
link. You'll need to "register" and work your way through various pages. I will warn you that you will see plenty of options that require payment, but it is possible to navigate through the system and not be charged. We hope to see some familiar faces at Nationals!

Who's, Who?

We are still gathering the final statistics, but this year's competition included 320 mathletes, 43 schools, 72 coaches and 51 volunteers. Whew! All of the students, parents and coaches that participated this year deserve a big pat on the back.

Since we had over 40 schools participate in our chapter competition, 5 schools will represent Central Florida at State Mathcounts.

Are You Ready???

The weekend before the competition is our big workday. The committee gets together to fold over 500 t-shirts, count tests, assemble the packets and double check names. It is a good thing that former Co-chair Jay has a minivan, because we have a lot of stuff....and that is just for registration.

We always want everyone, regardless of the outcome, to have a good time. So, be prepared for a new way to win raffle tickets. The image above should give you a hint.

Registration Reminders

Please forgive the bullets, but we are engineers:

1. Fruit and juice will be provided at the student drop off location. How will you know where that is? A red balloon will be tied to the fire hydrant.

2. Look for our big MATHCOUNTS banner. The information table and a volunteer will be there to answer general questions and direction you to registration, photos, etc.

3. Once *all* of your students have arrived, please come to the registration table. Again, only Coaches should be at the registration table. You will be provided with a list of the Mathletes we have registered for your school to date. This is the "Purple Sheet." Review the students names carefully.

4. If you have no changes (we love you!!), please proceed to the "No Changes" line.

5. If you have some changes (we understand), please proceed to the "Changes" line.

6. Now is a good time to head over and take your school photo. Weather permitting, they will be taken outside.

A map that you can distribute to your parents is forthcoming. Check our website for new information!

Save the Date - More Mathcounts

If our local competition is not enough for you, there is more...the state AND national Mathcounts competition will be held here in Orlando, Florida. Parents, coaches, and students are invited. Just remember that the same rules apply. You can only come for the afternoon session. As soon as the agenda is finalized, we will post it here.

  • State - March 27, 2009 at Altamonte Hilton
  • National - May 7-10, 2009, Orlando, Florida

Registration Update

A record number of schools, 44, registered for our competition this year. I don't have the official or current tally of the students. I quit counting when it hit 350. We have other engineers keeping tabs on that number. All I know is that even if we wanted to have our competition at UCF, we have now outgrown that venue.

Special thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding regarding the competition date and location. If one of your mathletes has a conflict with the date, feel free to bring another student along in their place. It is allowed and encouraged.

Field Trip!

Krista and I are taking a very important field trip to Olympia High School tomorrow morning. Since it is a new venue, we want to make sure the testing, scoring and coaches' rooms will work out. If there is anything else you want to know, send us an e-mail ASAP and we will do what we can. Photos from Krista's initial site visit are over there -->.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Do you need some more sample questions? Here is a copy of last year's ciphering questions.

What's for Lunch?

After the popular questions, "When's the competition? Where's the competition location?" the next most frequently asked question is, "Will lunch be provided?"

While our fundraising is not where we planned and the increase in school participation (a good thing) is freaking out our coordinators, we don't want to diminish the overall experience of the students. Lunch will be served. Back by popular demand is pizza! Cheese and pepperoni pizza will be provided. These are big pizzas too, not the so called large 10" pizzas that we served at UCF. A mixture of bottled water and canned soft drinks will also be provided. We tried to go with a healthy lunch last year, but were just floored by the amount of fruit that was left untouched. So, there will be no fruit this year.

Schedule of Events

Here it is! The official schedule of events. If you've ever wondered why we do the raffle, I'll let you in on a secret...we need all the time we can get to compile the final scores. Yes, we have two computers running and a well experienced scoring room; but, with over 360 students that is a lot of tests to check and re-check.

One more reminder, parents are allowed only in the afternoon sessions and lunch is not provided for them unless they are listed as a coach or co-coach in your paperwork.

Photo Release Form

We are very fortunate to have a volunteer photographer the morning of competition. Don will take a picture of you and your team during registration. We will provide you with one framed picture that you can take home. It's just one more reason to stay for the afternoon fun.

Important things to remember include:
- Make sure that everyone is ready when you get in line.
- Bring your photo release forms.
- Smile.

Coaches Room Refreshments

We heard you lound and clear and at last night's meeting, the official decision was made. We will order more donuts for the scoring room and make sure that the volunteers don't get there first. Hot coffee (decaf and caffinated) will also be provided.

Krista and Carole will be your hosts the day of the competition. This year the coaches room is directly adjacent to the competition room. We also recommend that you bring something to pass the time: knitting, papers to grade, etc.

What will be in my bag this year?

The following items should be in the bag you receive at registration.

• T-shirts & Pencils
• Nametags (please wear in plain view)
• Certificates
• Copy of your Chapter Registration Form
• Evaluation Form
• Coach Information Update
• Program with Schedule of Events (2)
• Coupons for lunch

Nametags and certificates are made based on the names you provide. Please double check the spelling (we do too). The student name you provide should match the name that the student uses on their test. No nicknames please! Last year a student used a nickname on their test and created a half-hour delay in the scoring room.
